About the Survivor Advisory Committee

The Survivor Advisory Committee (SAC) is a paid advisory body made up of individuals with lived experience of human trafficking. The SAC members provide expert insight and recommendations to the STOP Human Trafficking Task Force to ensure survivor voices meaningfully inform decision-making, systems change, and community responses.

We are committed to creating a space that is equitable, accessible, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed, where survivors’ knowledge and expertise are respected and valued.

Once the SAC is formed, members will come together to shape the committee’s purpose, guiding principles, and objectives.

The task force intends for this committee to have three members.

Role of the Survivor Advisory Committee

SAC members provide guidance and recommendations related to:

  • Strategic planning and priority setting
  • Program development and evaluation
  • Policy and systems advocacy
  • Training materials for professionals and partners

Confidentiality

All members are required to sign a confidentiality agreement to protect:

  • The privacy and safety of fellow members
  • Sensitive information shared during committee meetings and activities
  • The schedules and location of participants during meetings

Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion

We strongly encourage survivors from diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply, including individuals who face barriers related to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, immigration status, language, or geography.

The SAC and selection process are designed to:

  • Reduce barriers to participation
    • Provide accommodation and support at every stage
    • Minimize re-traumatization and prioritize participant choice and control

Selection Criteria

SAC members will be selected through a transparent process based on their qualifications and ability to contribute to the committee. Selection will consider:

  • Interest in the SAC’s role in supporting the task force
  • Relevant lived or professional experience
  • Commitment to working collaboratively
  • Ability to contribute constructively to discussions and activities
  • Recruitment will seek survivors with a range of perspectives, including experiences with sex or labor trafficking and differences in age at the time of exploitation, race and ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, and geographic location.
  • Selection will consider each applicant’s strengths, communication style, willingness to collaborate, and commitment to the committee’s shared work.
  • Lived experience is central, but applicants will be considered for what they can contribute, not solely for what they have experienced.

Conflicts of Interest and Disqualifiers

  • Applicants should not currently be a part of the STOP Human Trafficking Task Force leadership.
  • Applicants cannot be related to or in a personal relationship with STOP Human Trafficking Task Force partners that could influence committee decisions.
  • Applicants cannot be the subject of an active criminal investigation or pending criminal charges.
